The beginning of 2013 started with finishing my recording of ‘Black Tie Affair’ – a project funded by Rawlco Radio, friends and family, recorded at MCC and produced by Greg Godovitz. In the meantime, I was performing in the Calgary area in original music venues with The Carla Olive Trio (drummer Colin Adhikary and bassist Stephen Shepard) to promote the upcoming release. I released my 5th album in March, with most of the original cast members on the CD with a CD release concert celebration at The National Music Center. Seven songs were soon to be played on Alberta’s own Original Music Station: CKUA. Canadian Music Week in March was also a highlight for the month, as tagging along with my Producer and mingling with music moguls, gave me a greater understanding of the music biz.
Preparations began for a 10-day solo tour through Alberta, and came to fruition in August. With 9 shows in 10 days, the experience through the Alberta terrain from South to North was breathtaking, as well as meeting all sorts of wonderful people. A highlight on the tour was sitting down with CKUA’s own Baba for an intimate interview on air.
After the summer was through, I was forced to rethink the Carla Olive Trio, as Colin went off to music school in Toronto. To reach a different demographic with my original music, I decided to put a cover band together to introduce my music in more mainstream venues. The pop/rock band “Bad Neighbor”, was formed with Singer/Songwriter bassist and guitar player Joelle Glass, bassist and keyboard player Stephen Shepard and drummer Jeff Burns. Between the four of us, we are able to trade instruments throughout our performance, cover songs we love, and most importantly, present our own original material.
Café Koi’s Singer/Songwriter Open Mic met its 4th year anniversary in July, and hosting this magical night every Tuesday has truly been an inspiration! Mikey’s Juke Joint has included me as one of the regular hosts of its Pussy Willow Wednesday Open Mic night, this past year – filled with good friends, performers, and great jams.
Looking forward to another year filled with great opportunities to share my music, performing alongside and being inspired by other musicians, learning more of my music craft and writing more songs. Stay tuned!
