It was warm on the streets of Toronto last night as I set out to hit a few venues on my list of bands I wanted to check out. I scoped out the venues walking distance from my hotel which my wristband gained access to. I stopped in at The Hideout for Matt Morgan & The Mayday – an energenic rock band from Toronto. Then I dropped in at the Hard Rock to take in Manafest – a three piece band with drummer, guitar player and vocalist performing to Hip Hop tracks. Following them, a young woman named Tzadeka from Edmonton performed a DJ set – very creative and chill. To top up my evening, I caught a show at the Cherry Cola’s Rock & Rolla Cabaret to take in Karolina – a rock band from Toronto. Was totally great to hear and see the energy of some young bands!

Bright and early, I arrived at the Sheraton for the Conference for orientation at 8AM. Networking is encouraged, and meeting new people is easy to do as the rooms are full and inevitable that someone is always sitting next to you. First session: Social Media with Brian Solis – he wrote ‘What’s The Future Of Business’. Second session: View From the Top: The State of The Music Business. Third session: Online Music Marketing. Fourth: Streaming Music. Fifth: Breaking an Artist via Social Media, and finally a session on Music Discovery. I’ve attended a number of music conferences over the years, but this one is entirely different considering the age we are in today with social media, music streaming and downloading. Basically, every artist is working from the same plain – we are competing with and can utilize successful artists along with up and coming artists. I certainly learned a TON, and am being equipped with tools of the trade… I’m excited to get to work!

I’m eager to pick up my guitar and work on some new song ideas for the rest of the afternoon, then taking in some more bands tonight… ahhhh… I’m loving this concentrated time for music!
